The church of Santa Maria

Via Torino, Milano

The Church of Santa Maria so San Satiro, designed by Donato Bramante, houses one of the greatest examples of a fake stucco perspective fugue created to illusionistically lengthen the interior space behind the altar. What appeared to be over fifteen metres deep actually measures no more than ninety-seven centimetres!

On the altar is a fresco depicting the Madonna and Child, dating back to 1200 and originally placed outside.

The Church of Santa Maria presso San Satiro is open and can be visited free of charge from Tuesday to Saturday from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. and on Sundays from 2 p.m. to 5.30 p.m.
